DESCRIPTION:\nJoin the&nbsp\;University Sunrise Rotary Club&nbsp\;for a pro
 gram featuring University of Washington Astronomy Professor Emeritus Bruce
  Balick.\n\n\n\nThe&nbsp\;program will be presented in-person and on Zoom 
 on Thursday morning informally beginning at 7 a.m. The formal meeting incl
 uding the program runs from 7:30-8:30 a.m. No registration is required\, a
 nd the program is free.\n\n\n\nThe in-person meeting will be at the Wedgwo
 od Community Church at 8201 30th Ave NE\, Seattle.  The meeting will also

 \n\n\n\n\nBruce Balick\, Professor Emeritus\, Astronomy\, University of Wa
 shington\n\n\n\nIn our last talk we discussed what aliens have already tau
 ght us even though we’ve never spoken to one. In this talk we will talk 
 about searching for aliens. Where might we find them in our solar system?&
 nbsp\; How many alien civilizations are there’re likely to be within “
 shouting distance”?&nbsp\;&nbsp\; What efforts have we made to connect w
 ith aliens?&nbsp\; What is a good strategy for targeting aliens?&nbsp\; Wh
 at searches are underway?&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nBalick joined the UW Astronomy Dep
 artment in 1975. Subsequently he served&nbsp\;as&nbsp\;its chair\, became 
 active in faculty governance\, and participated&nbsp\;in the design&nbsp\;
 of new instrumentation for Hubble. Since his retirement in&nbsp\;2014\, Ba
 lick&nbsp\;continues to publish research papers using data from the&nbsp\;
 Hubble Space Telescope&nbsp\;and to supervise astronomy undergraduates in&
 nbsp\;research and public outreach.\n\n\n\nHe&nbsp\;is a coauthor on a res
 earch paper&nbsp\;based on one of the newly released images&nbsp\;from the
  James Webb&nbsp\;telescope.\n\n\n\n\n
