DESCRIPTION:\nJoin the&nbsp\;University Sunrise Rotary Club&nbsp\;for a pro
 gram featuring our member\, Astronomy Professor Emeritus Bruce Balick.\n\n
 \n\nThe&nbsp\;program will be presented in-person and on Zoom on Thursday 
 morning.&nbsp\; The formal meeting including the program runs from 7:30-8:
 30 a.m.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;No registration is required\, and the program is free
 .\n\n\n\n\nThe in-person meeting will be at the North Seattle Church (2150
  N 122nd St\, Seattle). Doors open at 7:00 a.m. and the program begins at

 ?&nbsp\; What’s inside?&nbsp\; Why can’t light (or everything else) es
 cape from a black hole?&nbsp\; Are black\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n holes ever visibl
 e?&nbsp\; How do they form? How long do they last?&nbsp\; Could we see one
  that’s coming at us?&nbsp\; Might eventually become be dinner for a hun
 gry black hole?&nbsp\; If the Sun’s gravity binds the solar system\, the
 n does the gravity of our black holes bind our galaxy? These questions and
  more\, along with some very unexpected observations from the James Webb S
 pace Telescope\, will be reviewed in the talk. Get your questions ready!\n
 \n\n\nBruce Balick&nbsp\;studied physics at&nbsp\;Beloit College&nbsp\;in 
 Wisconsin and received his doctorate from&nbsp\;Cornell University. He has
  been at the&nbsp\;University of Washington&nbsp\;since 1975\, where he he
 aded the department.  He is now professor emeritus. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 197
 4\, he discovered&nbsp\;Sagittarius A&nbsp\;with&nbsp\;Robert Hanbury Brow
 n&nbsp\;using the interferometer at the&nbsp\;National Radio Astronomy Obs
 ervatory&nbsp\;(NRAO). His research focuses on&nbsp\;planetary nebulae\, t
 he final stages of most stars in the galaxy (including the Sun).\n\n\n\nHe
  is a user of the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescop
 e.\n\n\n\nHe is a Fellow of&nbsp\;the American Association for the Advance
 ment of Science.\n
