Language is, arguably, the crowning achievement of our species–the very thing that separates us from the myriad of other creatures we share a planet with. And yet, there is no scientific consensus about exactly how or when our ancient ancestors started using language. This lecture will provide an overview of several leading theories of how language is intertwined with the evolutionary origins of homo sapiens.
Dr. Rachel Bristol currently teaches at University of Washington. She received her PhD in Cognitive Science from UC San Diego. She also has an MA in Linguistics from the University of Delaware and a BA in English from the University of Oregon. She is fascinated by language and the way it interlaces with our brains, our minds, and our societies.
